Marketing Managment 1980s

Back in 1980, as a Freshman in College, one of the first pictures I encountered in Marketing 101, is the Sari-Sari Store. The picture shows the pros and cons of the Sari-Sari store. It is based on buying products from a source or supplier in wholesale and retailing the products by adding a margin of profit at a piece mill fashion.

I was attracted taking up and major in Marketing Management because of the various topics and tools Marketing offers from creating a Marketing Plan, Marketing Research, Industrial Marketing, Advertising, Public Relation, Retailing, and distribution At a young age, I was exposed to selling various products such as  Black Forrest Cuckoo Clocks that were made in West Germany. From 1978 I  experienced what it was like to work on a radio program.

Barely in my teen’s, I was exposed to selling various products such as  Black Forrest Cuckoo Clocks that were made in West Germany. From 1978 I  experienced what it was like to work on a radio program during weekends.

This is where I met the distributor of the brand Macho Blade and Reynolds Ballpen which was at that time marketed by Dragon Enterprises. I wrote an article way back  a few months back Bloggers Hour, Campus Jazz and other stories

Let me try to recall what Marketing Management meant to me. And what makes this subject relevant for today’s Freelancers or Work@Home Professionals.

First of all, to you, What is Marketing?

Traditional Marketing Approach

It is a stormy afternoon where I am writing. PAGASA, The Philippine Atmospheric Geophysical, and Atmospheric Services, Luzon will be experiencing Strong to Gale Winds associated with the South Monsoon enhanced by the Typhoon Ising.

Just like our weather Marketing in the Digital World and current business practices seem to be dynamic and ever-changing.

Just this morning I had an interesting conversation with an old friend from Amazon. He was pretty tired. Working as a Team Leader, he has been with the company for almost a decade, right now he feels burnt out. I practically feel for him…

History of Jollibee

He confided to me that he was getting pretty tired working as a Team Leader. His team was having issues in reaching the metrics provided by his Superiors. He started asking me about Working@home and How he could start out and Market his skills and services

He started asking me about Working@home and How he could start out and Market his skills and services

This comes to mind a popular joke. “What comes first the Chicken or the Egg?”. Seriously, I feel for the guy and his family.

What was important for my friend? Continue to work with the company? The second choice suggest drop his old job and work at home and finally is to Work with the company and start a business that would supplement his income? What I had in mind is perhaps my friend was burned Out and was asking about looking for a job as Working At Home.

My friend was burned Out and was asking about looking for a job as Working At Home.

I explained to him that as a Freelancer it is not a job, it is a Business. I explained to him an example of a  Business model like Jollibee.

Promoting your product and Service takes time.

The picture first store was actually an ice-cream outlet. It never occurred to the business owner that a decade later Jollibee would be the number one Humberger Food chain in the Philippines, even surpassing the likes of McDonald’s, Wendy’s and Burger King. In fact, way back in the early 1970’s, There was a company that was selling burgers way before them. There is another company that has been in the market since 1962. I am referring to Tropical Hut which is run by the Que Family.

Tropical Hut hamburgers were better and tastier than the hamburgers of Jollibee. The big difference was Jollibee innovated and decades later captured what we now called the Panlasang Pinoy-The Filipino taste.

What is the difference between Marketing in the Corporate World and Online Marketing?

Internet marketing, or online marketing, refers to advertising and marketing efforts that use the Web and email to drive direct sales via electronic commerce, in addition to sales leads from Web sites or emails

I have cited an example of Marketing in the Corporate World. Online Marketing is directed towards a niche. It is providing a SOLUTION based on the Need of the Client. This is where Content Marketing comes in.

CONTENT MARKETING a type of marketing that involves the creation and sharing of online material (such as videos, blogs, and social media posts) that does not explicitly promote a brand but is intended to stimulate interest in its products or services.

CONCLUSION:

All though there is in a certain degree of similarities in Traditional Marketing and Online Marketing. It would entirely depend on the Business Owner approach in his niche or given target Market. I do admit that Online Marketing is different from Content Marketing. Marketing is a broad subject, it really entirely depends on the type of product or service which you as a Business Owner is offering to your Target Market.
